Bicowhite® Complex 

Bicowhite® Complex is a multi-target delivery system for brightening and evening the skin tone, developed using Bicosome® Technology by BICOSOME, S.L., Spain. It is made from 95.3% natural ingredients and contains five key actives encapsulated within Smart Disk structures: Niacinamide, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate, Bisabolol, and Phytic Acid. These actives work synergistically to inhibit the formation of dark spots from the very beginning of the pigmentation process.

The product is designed to address the main challenges of typical brightening formulations by offering both high efficacy and excellent skin tolerance. It targets only areas with hyperpigmentation without damaging skin structure, and it can be used year-round without causing photosensitivity.

This system features a dual structure composed of an outer lipidic vesicle and internal Smart Disks that encapsulate all five key actives. Each ingredient targets a specific stage of the melanin-production process:

  • Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate – inhibits melanin synthesis

  • 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid – prevents oxidation and darkening of existing pigment

  • Niacinamide – prevents the transfer of melanin to skin cells

  • Bisabolol – reduces inflammation that can trigger excess pigmentation

  • Phytic Acid – promotes skin cell renewal

In vitro studies show that Bicowhite® Complex reduces pigmentation by up to 32% within 4 days, while maintaining better skin structure compared to Kojic Acid.

Structure and Composition:
Bicowhite® Complex contains five key active ingredients encapsulated using Bicosome® Technology:

  • Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate (1–5%) – an Azelaic acid derivative sourced from olives

  • 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid (1–5%) – a stable vitamin C derivative

  • Niacinamide (1–5%) – vitamin B3

  • Bisabolol (0.1–1.0%) – extracted from Vanillosmopsis erythropappa

  • Phytic Acid (0.1–0.5%) – plant-derived phytic acid from corn

All five actives are encapsulated within Smart Disks, disc-shaped structures inside the Bicosome® system, composed of Lecithin, Lysolecithin, and Lactobacillus Ferment, which helps support skin balance.

1. Penetration into Target Skin Layers (Multi-Target Delivery)
Upon application, Bicowhite® Complex penetrates the skin without disrupting its structure.
The outer vesicle fuses with the outermost layer, while the internal Smart Disks carrying the five actives are delivered directly to target layers. The actives are released precisely where needed, while the disks integrate with the skin’s lipid matrix.

2. Inhibition of Melanin Production – Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate
This gentle Azelaic acid derivative inhibits tyrosinase, the key enzyme responsible for melanin synthesis.
By interacting with the enzyme’s active site, it reduces the conversion of Tyrosine → DOPA → Dopaquinone, thereby lowering melanin formation at the source.

3. Prevention of Melanin Oxidation & Darkening – 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid
This highly stable vitamin C derivative prevents melanin oxidation—an important process that makes pigmentation appear darker.
It can also convert dark melanin to reduced (lighter) melanin, helping fade existing dark spots.

4. Inhibition of Melanin Transfer – Niacinamide
Niacinamide blocks the transfer of melanin from melanocytes to keratinocytes by inhibiting PAR-2, a receptor involved in melanin transport.
Even if some melanin is still produced, it can no longer reach the skin surface effectively.

5. Anti-Inflammatory Protection – Bisabolol
Bisabolol reduces inflammation from sunlight, pollution, and external irritants—factors that often trigger excess pigmentation.
It also soothes and calms the skin, reducing irritation.

6. Promotion of Cell Turnover – Phytic Acid
Phytic Acid acts as a chelating agent, binding metal ions (such as Cu²⁺) essential for tyrosinase activity, reducing melanin production.

Clinical Study on Pigmentation Reduction and Skin Brightening
(In Vivo Clinical Study – Melanin Index Reduction)

Method:
A study was conducted on 20 female volunteers aged 35–65 over a period of 56 days.
Participants applied a gel containing 3% Bicowhite® Complex twice daily (morning and evening) on the face.
The study took place during the summer season with strong sunlight exposure.
Evaluations were performed using multiple instruments, including:

  • Mexameter® MX 18 (for Melanin Index)

  • Spectrophotometer CM-700d (for brightness and radiance)

  • Clinical assessments by expert evaluators

Results:

1. Melanin Index:

  • Day 0: Melanin Index = 88 (difference between dark spots and normal skin)

Research Study

A study conducted by the Department of Dermatology, University of Barcelona investigated the use of a multi-ingredient approach for reducing dark spots and melasma, focusing on inhibiting multiple stages of the melanogenesis pathway. The research demonstrated that combining ingredients that act on different mechanisms of melanin formation—such as tyrosinase inhibition, prevention of melanin transfer, and protection against oxidation—provides superior results compared to using a single active ingredient at a high concentration, with significantly lower irritation and better safety.
